In 2022, there were around 54k writers in the U.S. alone and this occupation is expected to grow 4% in 2023. With more and more companies investing in content marketing, there are plenty of article writing jobs available today.

In this post, I will break down how iWriter works, how to improve your earning potential, and if joining iWriter is worth your time.

What Is iWriter?

iWriter, founded by Brad Callen, can best be described as a content mill. The site offers SEO optimized content tailored to their clients needs.

But, what is a content mill?

Content mills or content farms produce a wide variety of content in large volumes for their clients. They offer writing services for low rates to businesses and hire writers to create fresh content fast to keep their clients coming back for more.

Unfortunately, this means the pay rate is unfair and measly for writers.

But content mills offer regular work that need no prior writing experience. This is why many writers start off at a content mill even though these sites are not looked upon favorably. Also, these platforms provide a simple way to hone your writing and research skills.

At iWriter, the focus is on producing plagiarism-free content using tools, to create original articles for their clients. They publish 100s of articles daily for blogs, e-commerce sites, Youtube video scripts, social media content and more.

How Does iWriter Work

All writers are divided into tiers – Standard, Premium, Elite and Elite Plus. Though you can view all the available article orders, you can access only those assignments that are at and below your tier level only.

Regardless of experience, all writers start at the ‘Standard’ level. Once you complete 25 assignments with a star rating of 4.1 or above, you move up to Premium level.

Each article order will have a time allotted to it, usually starting at 2.5 hours for 150 words.

You are allowed to cancel your picked assignment. The assignment will be returned to queue for another writer. There is no penalty for cancellation (yet).

Once you write your article on iWriter, the client or the requester reviews the work and either accepts or rejects it within 3 days. If your submitted work needs revision, the client will get back to you and you can resubmit the revised work within 3 days.

Higher tier writers may also receive special requests from clients.

Who Is Eligible To Join iWriter

• The site is open worldwide. You do not have to be a U.S. resident to apply
• You need to be 18 years or older to register
• There is no prior writing experience required. You do not have to submit writing samples
• All writers are required to complete the Tipalti registration process to get paid

How To Sign Up

The registration process is easy and free. You just have to provide your email address, fill in other necessary information and you are in. It is best to use your PayPal email address.

Once you are in, work on your profile settings to include your bio and any written samples you may want to show clients. You can start writing even if you have not filled your profile yet but having a well-detailed profile always adds value in the long run for any company you register with.

You can click on the ‘Write Content’ tab to find open assignments to start writing immediately.

How To Make Money Writing Online At iWriter

Once you are on the Write Content page, take a look at the available assignments. All writers start at Standard level so you can only work on these assignments.

Clients are called Requesters. You can see the approval and rejection rate for each Requester. I am usually skeptical to pick up projects from any requester who have a high rejection rate.

Always check if the client has any Special Instructions’ for their article request. Special Instructions will include any requirements like keywords that the they want included in the article.

The time allotted to each article depends on the words. For example, 150 words maybe allotted 2.5 hours and so on.

If your work gets rejected, there will be a reason provided. You will be paid for all accepted work only. And you also get rated anywhere between 1 to 5 for your article.

The payment is made weekly and the minimum withdrawal amount is $20.

There are multiple payment methods available at iWriter though I have only ever used PayPal. But their FAQs also mention wire transfer, direct deposit, or a prepaid debit card.

How Much Can You Earn

Many content mills pay $0.01 per word. On an average, these writers are paid $0.05 – $0.15 per word.

At iWriter, your pay depends on your tier level and availability of assignments. iWriters get paid 65% of the approved article. If a client sends a special request that you complete successfully, you will earn 70% for that article.

For a 500 word article, Standard tier writers earn about $2.44, Premium writers can earn about $3.90-$4.50 while an Elite tier writer can earn $8-$9. An Elite Plus writer earns $25-$30 for a 500 word article.

If you work on your speed and set goals for each day, you can make around $200-$250 a month as a Standard tier writer. Many iWriters earn about $100-$125 a month working part-time.

Honestly, most assignments can be completed in an hour for the lower tiers. This means you can earn more money by picking more assignments.

And if you advance up the ranks, on an average, an Elite Plus writer can earn around $1000-$1200 and more a month. However, there is more availability of assignments for Premium and Standard writers due to the cheaper rates.

Expert Tips To Earn More At iWriter

1. Add as much information to your profile, like qualifications and writing samples. Get your profile to stand out for future clients
2. Not following the ‘Special Instructions’ is an easy way to have your work rejected. You can always reach out to the client when in doubt
3. Set daily and hourly goals on number of articles to complete. Be quick to pick up projects
4. To earn higher, focus on getting as many good ratings and reviews from clients as possible. Choose Requesters with higher acceptance rating, say around 80%-90%. This may affect the amount of assignments you can work on but beneficial in the long run
5. It is advisable to do research on every topic you write about. But, if you come across a topic that you have no idea about, that does not pique your interest and requires in-depth research on, it is best to skip that assignment
6. Rate the Requester by giving feedback after your assignment. It is a great way to build a connection
7. iWriter uses Copyscape to weed out articles that are plagiarized. Writers are banned after repeated warnings so make sure your articles are original and unique
8. Accounts with ratings as low as 3 after 5 reviews will get banned. Needless to say, submitting high quality articles each time will help keep your star rating 4 and above
9. Lastly, do not let rejections get to you. Keep working on your writing technique and hone your skills

My Conclusion – Pros And Cons

Now, there are few reasons I took up iWriter back in the day even though I knew the pay rate is not great.

As I was new to freelance writing, I was insecure about my lack of experience and was unsure if someone would actually like what I wrote. I did not have the courage to pitch an idea to magazines or guest blogs yet. So, I needed to start somewhere.

I received an email 3 days after my first article that my work was accepted and rated full stars. The low pay did not matter. iWriter gave me that push needed to simply go for it and start writing. And with that boost of confidence, I started my first blog.

I have long since moved on from iWriter but I did have a positive learning experience from the site.

So, yes. You can definitely make money writing online at iWriter.

But I would only suggest the site to new writers who are looking to start somewhere. It is an easy extra income source but I would not call the pay fair. iWriter cannot replace a full-time job at any point.
